  • Name Charles Louis Seagraves
    • The Seagraves surname presented for this person is based on the dominant spelling found in the various records researched, but primarily on the name carved on the person's gravestone. HOWEVER, for the common variations of the Seagraves family name of which there are over 20, such as Cegrave(s) Segrave(s), Seagreave(s), Seegrave(s), Segrove(s), Seagrove(s), etc. all of which have been given the Seagraves spelling for clarity and ease of analysis.
Certain variations are used so consistently within a family that they have been retained in this analysis, specifically, SAGRAVES (which also includes Sagrove(s)) and SEAGRAVE. Sagraves was adopted by the early settlers of eastern Kentucky about 1800. Seagrave was the version brought to Massachusetts by the John & Sarah Seagrave family who settled there about 1725.
The Seagraves version is the most common found (about 39%) of all those found on the 1940 census.
A discussion of the name spelling variations can be found on the Home Page of this website.
    • Charles "became a ticket clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad in 1886, he was appointed general colonization agent at Chicago in 1905. In that post he was supervisor of hundreds of train loads of new settlers seeking opportunities in the territory opening up as the result of new railroads. He was given the highly important position of chairman of the Agricultural committee, which was to aid in the development of thirty-four states...in the plains of [West] Texas today one finds the town of SEAGRAVES." which was named after Charles by the Santa Fe Railroad. • The 1900 census entry for Charles' family appears to be full of errors or mistranscriptions. The names of the people, Charles, Ella M., and Charles fit the actual family, but the known daughter was Mary Louise, not Emma. Also, Charles was born in PA, not IL. And, his parents were born in PA, not Germany.
Perhaps they were such recent arrivals that they were not well know in the community or the census taker made some errors.

    • Charles' death "prompted this tribute from George P. Clements, manager of the Agricultural dept. of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce...'The passing of Charles L. Seagraves has left a void in the agricultural world. He was a remarkable man in a great many ways, but the most outstanding quality was his refusal to grow old. Few men had his versatility, still fewer his elastic to bend to the change of times. Never did he doubt that American Agriculture would hold its place in the economic set-up of the nation." [1]
