- The surname presented for this person as with each other in this study is based on the dominant spelling found in the various records researched, but primarily on the name carved on the person's gravestone. EXCEPT for the common variations of the Seagraves family name of which there are over 20, such as Segraves, Seagreaves, Seagroves, etc. For clarity and ease of analysis all those variations have been given the Seagraves name. Certain variations are used so consistently within a family that they have been retained in this analysis, specifically, SAGRAVES and SEAGRAVE. "Genealogy of the Seagrave Family, 1725-1881" shows John's death as 26 Jul 1857, but the "Hale Collection of Cemetery Inscriptions and Newspaper Notices, 1629-1934" and "Connecticut, Deaths and Burials Index, 1650-1934" (both on Ancestry.com) report his death as 27 Jul 1858, which we will use here. No grave for him has yet been found on Findagrave.com. It is possible that his body was not recovered. [1, 2, 3]
