  • Name Ernest Ralph SEAGRAVE
    • The surname presented for this person as with each other in this study is based on the dominant spelling found in the various records researched, but primarily on the name carved on the person's gravestone. EXCEPT for the common variations of the Seagraves family name of which there are over 20, such as Segraves, Seagreaves, Seagroves, etc. For clarity and ease of analysis all those variations have been given the Seagraves name. Certain variations are used so consistently within a family that they have been retained in this analysis, specifically, SAGRAVES and SEAGRAVE. The Seagraves version is the most common found (about 39%) of all on the 1940 census. A discussion of the name spelling variations can be found on the Home Page of this website.

    • The birthplace for Ernest is confused in the records.
The 1900 census in which the original writing is very faint and currently unreadable, it indexed to show he was born in Vermont and that his mother, Eva, was born in Virginia. But, then his father, actually George E. Seagrave is indexed as Isaac Leagram.
The 1910 census which is much more legible shows his mother born in Vermont and Ernest born in Illinois. Eva, his step-mother, was George's second wife since she is shown as having no children in a household with 3. On Ernest's index page, Eva is shown as born in New Hampshire even though the census page clearly states Vermont.
Ernest's WW I draft registration card does not show a place of birth.
The 1920 census gives his birthplace as Massachusetts, but the 1930 and 1940 censuses again list his birthplace as Illinois.
His father, George E. Seagrave was born in Massachusetts and appears to have lived out his life there, so it is unlikely that Ernest was born elsewhere (especially Illinois). Although, if his mother was from Vermont she may have gone there for his birth as suggested by the 1900 census listing.
Further research will be required to settle this question. The Genealogy of the Seagrave Family 1725-1881 clearly shows Ernest born in Elgin IL, but, again, that is not likely.
