  • Name James Ernest Seagraves  [1
    • The Seagraves surname presented for this person is based on the dominant spelling found in the various records researched, but primarily on the name carved on the person's gravestone. HOWEVER, for the common variations of the Seagraves family name of which there are over 20, such as Cegrave(s) Segrave(s), Seagreave(s), Seegrave(s), Segrove(s), Seagrove(s), etc. all of which have been given the Seagraves spelling for clarity and ease of analysis.
Certain variations are used so consistently within a family that they have been retained in this analysis, specifically, SAGRAVES (which also includes Sagrove(s)) and SEAGRAVE. Sagraves was adopted by the early settlers of eastern Kentucky about 1800. Seagrave was the version brought to Massachusetts by the John & Sarah Seagrave family who settled there about 1725.
The Seagraves version is the most common found (about 39%) of all those found on the 1940 census.
A discussion of the name spelling variations can be found on the Home Page of this website.
Born 5 Aug 1882  Clarke County, Georgia Find all individuals with events at this location  [1, 2
    • Findagrave.com shows James' gravestone with the date of his birth as 5 Aug 1882. The "Segraves/Seagraves and Related Families of Northeast Georgia" by Myra C. Watkins listed that date as 5 Aug 1881, but I will stick with his gravestone date. The regularly inaccurate WW I draft registration cards gives his date of birth as 5 Aug 1880, probably to make him old enough to avoid the possibility of being drafted. [1, 2, 3]

    • As with James' birth date, Findagrave.com shows 1 Sep 1928 engraved on his gravestone as opposed to the 10 Apr 1928 listed in "Segraves/Seagraves and Related Families of Northeast Georgia". With no Georgia death record to pin it down, the gravestone seems the most reliable source. [1, 2]
    • "North Carolina Deaths, 1906-1930" describes James Seagraves, age 45, married, textile worker a resident of Winder, GA, died in Salisbury, NC on 4 Sep 1928. However, no death certificate for a James Seagraves is listed in 1828 in Rowan County, NC. [5]
