Goodman SEAGRAVES [1] |
- The primary research on Goodman and other children of William Segraves was done by Wanda Sanders Lubin and published in her booklet "Descendants of William Seagraves and Rebecca Edwards of Wake County, North Carolina and Rutherford County, Tennessee/ Goodman Seagraves and Margaret Ellen Sisson of Lafayette County, Mississippi and Polk County, Arkansas" in 1983.
In that booklet she recounts:
"There is an interesting story that has been told to me that has passed down in our family. It seems at the end of the Civil War, Goodman rode up to his home in Rutherford County, Tennessee. There through the kitchen window he saw his wife, Narcissa, feeding a small baby with another man sitting at the table. Apparently she had been told that Goodman had died in the War and she remarried. Goodman, we are told, just got on his horse and rode away."
I have not found a record of Narcissa getting married in Tennessee in the early 1860s, so the story may not have been completely true. However, Goodman is next found in Lafayette County, Mississippi.
- The Seagraves surname presented for this person is based on the dominant spelling found in the various records researched, but primarily on the name carved on the person's gravestone. HOWEVER, for the common variations of the Seagraves family name of which there are over 20, such as Cegrave(s) Segrave(s), Seagreave(s), Seegrave(s), Segrove(s), Seagrove(s), etc. all of which have been given the Seagraves spelling for clarity and ease of analysis.
Certain variations are used so consistently within a family that they have been retained in this analysis, specifically, SAGRAVES (which also includes Sagrove(s)) and SEAGRAVE. Sagraves was adopted by the early settlers of eastern Kentucky about 1800. Seagrave was the version brought to Massachusetts by the John & Sarah Seagrave family who settled there about 1725.
The Seagraves version is the most common found (about 39%) of all those found on the 1940 census.
A discussion of the name spelling variations can be found on the Home Page of this website.
